Charlotte's second year, in photos

Charlotte of Cambridge is two today. The private celebrations that will mark her birthday were preceded by a new image of the fourth in line to the throne, released on May 1st. It round off a year of photos of Charlotte Elizabeth Diana who has made several high profile appearances since her first birthday. As Charlotte turns two, here's a look back at her second year - in photos....

Princess Charlotte made her Trooping the Colour debut on June 11th 2016, just five weeks after she turned one. Charlotte appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in the arms of her mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, and dressed all in pink. She appeared marginally more interested in Kate's jewellery and her own new teeth than any of the pomp and ceremony but she was on hand to help her great grandmother celebrate her own 90th birthday and all but stole the show while she was at it.

Charlotte made her first official overseas visit in September 2016, at the age of 16 months when she accompanied her parents and big brother, Prince George, to Canada. Our first glimpse of the princess was at the airport as her mum carried her down the plane steps and straight to her first reception line where Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was on hand to welcome the royals and start off a lifetime of handshakes for Charlotte.

Charlotte and George took royal centre stage when the Cambridges attended a party for military families during the Canada tour. Charlotte was seen getting into some music, starting a fight with her own cardigan and being totally overwhelmed with excitement at the chance to cuddle a rabbit. But it was her sheer exuberance on her arrival when she attacked a balloon arch with all the energy of her conquering ancestors that really caught everyone's attention. When Charlotte means business, she means business.

Charlotte's final appearance of the Canada tour came as the Cambridges said goodbye to their hosts and got ready for a seaplane ride before heading home. Having found her royal feet with her first public steps at the children's party, Charlotte had no intention of being carried and was on her pins as soon as possible as mum and dad did the whole smiling and waving thing. Charlotte looked pretty happy herself as she enjoyed her third and final engagement of her big visit to Canada.

Princess Charlotte was seen on Christmas Day when she went to church with her parents, George and her maternal grandparents, Michael and Carole Middleton. Carried into church, she made it more than clear on her way out that she was in no mood to hang about. All but dragging Kate out of the church, she clung on to her stripy candy cane present and marched purposefully back to the car that took her home to carry on with her Christmas celebrations.

Now we are two. For her second birthday, Charlotte has appeared in a photo taken by Kate and released on the Kensington Palace Twitter and Instagram accounts. All in yellow, Charlotte looks as if she has less than a second for photos before getting back to being very busy with her game. Her mum has said she's the boss at home and throughout her second year we've seen plenty of indications of that determination in the images caught on camera. Charlotte of Cambridge, a princess with purpose.
