The Queen's 91st Birthday, in pictures

The Queen celebrated her 91st birthday today. The celebrations were nowhere near as big or grand as last year's epic 90th celebrations but there was still a lot of joy taken in marking this special day. Twitter went nuts with all kinds of royal birthday related trends and the official accounts of the Royal Family shared some rather lovely photos. There were also some great pictures of the Queen as she celebrated her big day with some time at the races, heading to Newbury. Here's a look back at the Queen's 91st birthday, in images.

How's that for a birthday smile? The Queen looked very happy indeed as she marked turning 91 with a day out at the races in Newbury accompanied by the Princess Royal.

The singing took place at Buckingham Palace where the Band of the Irish Guards played 'Happy Birthday' with some random joining in from the crowds. Rather lovely.

There gun salutes as well. The King's Royal Troop Horse Artillery fired a 41 gun salute in Hyde Park to celebrate the Queen's birthday.

The Honourable Artillery Company fired a 62 gun salute in the shadow of Tower Bridge for the big day.

There were also plenty of trips down memory lane with archive photos aplenty looking back at the many achievements, so far, of Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. When this little princess was born, third in line to the throne, on April 21st 1926 no one really expected her to reign. Over nine decades later, the history books are filled with moments from her historic life and record breaking reign. But perhaps the best of the old photos was this sweet moment of a little princess with her mum and dad, just weeks after her birth.

The image that the Royal Family left us with of this big birthday was a recent photo of the Queen as she visited Berkshire. The smile that has been constant for nine decades and counting is there and no wonder. Plenty of people were more than happy to celebrate with Elizabeth II as she marked 91 years. May there be many more Happy Birthdays to come.
