Illness changes The Queen's Christmas plans

The Queen has delayed her departure to Norfolk for her annual Christmas break at Sandringham because of illness. Elizabeth II and her consort, the Duke of Edinburgh, have heavy colds and won't be making the trip as planned today.

Concerns were raised over the health of the Queen and her 95 year old husband after their scheduled departure for Sandringham was cancelled at the last minute.  The royal couple were due to leave on Wednesday morning, with the Queen travelling by train, but arrangements were altered at the last minute. Buckingham Palace then confirmed that both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have heavy colds.

The Royal Family traditionally celebrates Christmas at Sandringham although this year we already know that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with their two children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, won't be there as they are staying with Kate's parents at Bucklebury instead.

Yesterday, the Queen hosted her extended family at Buckingham Palace for a pre Christmas lunch. The trip to Norfolk is expected to take place in the next few days, depending on the health of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
