It was a life on the ocean wave for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today as they headed to Portsmouth to support the bid to bring the America's Cup to Britain. William and Kate dressed down and zipped up for an afternoon on the water as they found out more about the bid to win the most famous trophy in sailing as well as watch preparations in full sail.

The royal couple were welcomed to Portsmouth by members of the 1851 Trust, the charity which aims to inspire the younger generation through sailing - Kate is its patron.

This was all about royal support for a big sporting attempt as well. Britain has never won the Americas Cup and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been high profile supporters of thie bid to #BringTheCupHome.

They were there to watch part of the preparations as the Land Rover BAR team led by Sir Ben Ainslie attempted to win the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series. William and Kate arrived in Portsmouth knowing that the British crew needed a win on the day to secure victory in that particular series.

After plenty of chatting on shore, as well as a chance to see some of the technology behind the bid, William and Kate jumped on board a boat to follow the race from the water. It was a close call but a home win.

The prize giving got noisy with plenty of cheers for the winners while William and Kate offered congratulations.

It was good preparation for the America's Cup itself which takes place off Bermuda in 2017. We don't know yet whether sailing fan, Kate, will be there to cheer on the team as they aim to #bringthecuphome but we do know that the Duchess of Cambridge is determined to put a spotlight on the sport in the months and years to come. Get ready to watch William and Kate set sail many times over in the future.
