What the Windsor Women Wore: Trooping the Colour

The Queen in green at Trooping the Colour 2016

In case you missed it, the Queen wore green to Trooping the Colour this year. Her bright, well let's face it, very bright coat and hat is definitely the style statement of the whole birthday weekend, if not of the royal year so far. Unmissable and eye catching, it is the most memorable moment from the wardrobe used by the women of Windsor over the course of three days of celebrations for the Queen's official 90th birthday. Here's a look back at what they wore for this weekend to remember, starting with Trooping the Colour.

The Queen is said to choose outifts that make her stand out for her big appearances so that everyone can catch a glimpse of her. There's no denying that this green - is it neon? - Stuart Parvin coat with matching hat by Rachel Trevor did that and then some. It got everyone talking and there is no way anyone is going to forget what she wore to her big official birthday bash.

It was a battle of the pastel duchesses in the carriage behind as both Camilla and Kate kept it pale and interesting for Trooping the Colour 2016.  The Duchess of Cornwall chose a crisp white dress with matching coat and one of her famous, very big hats. This one had a neat brim while the crown featured a huge wrap around feather effect.

The Duchess of Cambridge had plenty of meaning in her outfit. She wore the cream Alexander McQueen coat first seen for Princess Charlotte's christening. There was a different hat - this pretty pink piece with flower detail under the brim is by Philip Treacy. But the significance of the coat choice became clear when Kate carried Charlotte on to the balcony at Buckingham Palace for the first time - for her daugther's first two public appearances, she chose the same outfit.

The Countess of Wessex also kept it pale, choosing a pretty white two piece suit with embellishment at the jacket's edging and an unusual hat made up of leaves and flowers in palest pink which sat rather neatly on the crown of her head.  Her daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, showed off more style saviness with a simple and striking blue and white outfit.

There was plenty of brightness from Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie who bucked the pastel trend and went all out for colour.  Beatrice went for a blue bandage dress with contrasting hat in deep yellow. The shape of this headwear is interesting while the size keeps it from being overpowering.

Hat of the day might well have belonged to Eugenie who matched this terrific white topper with pink feather detail to a dark green two piece outfit and scored a style hit.

Zara Tindall had a top hat for the occasion as well - her bright pink effort with fabulous feathers was standout while her fitted and simple white dress was rather lovely. This is a fashion winner and then some from Zara.

Autumn Phillips chose a bright blue dress with wraparound effect at the top, a high belt and soft skirt with clever pleats moving into the top to give it plenty of shape. Her grey hat was almost too small but the overall effect was smart.

It might not have been as bright as the Queen's but the outfit worn by Lady Gabriella Windsor was just as striking in its own way. Her beige suit with pastel blue detailing was crisp and classy while her hat was elegance itself.  Princess Michael of Kent's black and white suit and hat was rather pretty while Lady Frederick Windsor's pale blue ensemble didn't really set anyone on fire but passed muster for the Trooping.

Overall, the bright colours won as you can see in the big group photo. The Duchess of Gloucester (right at the front) went for dark navy while there was dark blue and white for Lady Helen Taylor at the other end of the balcony too. And in the middle, that green outfit. The Queen really ruled the royal wardrobe on her official 90th birthday.
