Queen Letizia of Spain and the First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, joined forces today to promote education for girls. The Spanish queen welcomed Mrs Obama to Madrid for an event linked to the Let Girls Learn Initiative which the First Lady set up alongside her husband. President Barack Obama. And both made speeches on the importance of education for girls and women.

Michelle Obama was in Madrid to launch the Let Girls Learn Initiative in Spain. The project aims to bring education to the millions of young women around the world who don't get the chance to go to school or college and to encourage those who are attending to make the most of the opportunities presented to them.

The two women, who have met several times before, joined forces to spread the Let Girls Learn message at an event at Matadero Madrid.

In her speech, Queen Letizia said that now people understood that educating women and girls is inextricably linked to social justice and democracy, to better family life and to better health and nutrition. The Spanish queen also talked about the importance of technology in bringing education to girls who might otherwise miss out.

Michelle Obama underlined the fact that 62 million girls around the world don't have access to education and said that when young women miss out on school then it affects their families' health and their nation's health. And she encouraged the girls listening, in the room or via the media, to take action and help others learn.

Earlier in the week, Michelle Obama had visited Morocco to talk about the initiative there. She was joined by Princess Lalla Salma at the events while Meryl Streep also took part.

Following the initiative launch in Spain, Michelle Obama was the guest of Queen Letizia at her home in Madrid where the two had a private meeting as well as taking a walk in the gardens and posing for photos.

It brings to an end a busy month for Letizia after a quiet period earlier this year. And while summer may mean another quiet time, it looks like the Queen of Spain is ready to take on big issues as 2016 unfolds.
