The Royal Wardrobe: the cut of the coat

Let's face it, this week's Royal Wardrobe could have been all about Queen Maxima in Paris, her style was so superb. But that would have meant missing out on some other pretty stunning outfits. This week was all about the cut of the coat as sharp tailoring provided a fresh look while keeping things covered up as winter slowly turned into spring. Here are five of the best outfits of the past seven days led by...you've guessed it, Maxima.

The caramel coat that Maxima wore for day one of her State Visit to France is the gift that keeps on giving. Just when you thought you'd seen every wonder this fabulous outfit has to offer, another detail, pattern or embellishment catches your eye and the 'wows' start all over again. This is a standout outfit every single time. Perfection.

Princess Sofia has the market in royal maternity style sewn up. Every outfit she's worn in her pregnancy has been a dream of a design with a dash of chic thrown in for good measure and her black and white combo for a meeting with UN ambassadors this week was no exception. The black dress is elegant but it's the cut of the coat that really makes this one stand out - her pretty white jacket sits perfectly and the black ribbon belt is a lovely addition. Another winner for Sofia.

The Duchess of Cambridge gave us a new look from a new label this week and scored a big success. Her peachy pink check two piece, worn to a mentoring engagement in London, was a different look for Kate and all the better for that. The jacket had a sixties vibe while the skirt was neat and chic and the whole thing looked sharp and stylish. Let's hope it becomes a Kate favourite.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark went for smart tailoring in a different style for her when she chose a navy trouser suit for an event marking International Women's Day in Copenhagen. The embellishment on the jacket was a great addition and this unusual look for Mary was a win all round.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway chanelled a spring vibe in her colour choice for an engagement in Oslo this week. And the cut of her jacket, with an on trend ruffle effect, was pretty springy too. The suit was chic, the look was neat and Mette-Marit got us all looking forward to sunnier times ahead.
