A gala debut for granny's birthday

They're no strangers to royal engagements but on the occassion of their grandmother's 75th birthday, Christian and Isabella of Denmark have clocked up a new first. The young royals have made their debuts at a gala event with the future king wearing black tie and his sister in evening dress and receiving posies as they accompanied the Royal Family of Denmark to a concert in Aarhus.

Looking cool, calm and collected the next generation of royals led the way at this special evening to mark the 75th birthday of Queen Margrethe II. They walked in alongside their parents, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, before greeting dignitaries lined up to meet them. And then, relaxed as you like, they posed for photos before taking their seats.

The birthday girl herself wore navy blue and was all smiles as she accepted the good wishes of all those who had turned out to celebrate her 75th. Earlier in the day, the queen and her consort had ridden through the streets of Aarhus in a carriage to celebrate with the thousands who turned out to see them. Later they were joined by Frederik and Mary and Prince Joachim and Princess Marie for a reception and lunch at the Town Hall but before they tucked in the royals stepped out on to the balcony to greet yet more wellwishers.

But in the evening, Christian and Isabella stole the show. Their older cousins, Nikolai and Felix, were also there as was their mother, Countess Alexandra of Frederiksborg, with her husband, Martin Jorgensen. But as soon as the prince and princess stepped on to the red carpet, all eyes were on them. Christian hid his nerves by putting his hands casually in his pockets and strolling alongside his dad while Isabella held her mum's hand and smiled broadly.

There will no doubt be more chances to see Christian and Isabella in action over the coming week as Denmark celebrates this landmark birthday of its hugely popular queen. And as Queen Margrethe II turns 75 her successor and his sister have achieved another royal first as they debuted, with style, at a gala event.
